A Message from William Miller:
“I know personally how difficult it is to start an agency. I did this twelve years ago, completely on my own. I will share the steps I took to grow from one person into an agency with over a dozen developers.”
Challenges new business owners face and how I handled them:
1. Securing Funding
Obtaining enough capital to cover startup costs, operations, and growth is often the first major hurdle. Fortunately, as a software developer, I didn’t need funding. I just joined a freelance tech site, found some jobs and started working and grew the business until it could fully support me and my family.

2. Finding and Attracting Customers
Building brand awareness and generating consistent leads in a competitive market can be slow and costly. This is still a challenge. It will always be the main, ongoing struggle, but we’re getting noticed, which is helpful.
3. Managing Cash Flow
Balancing income and expenses is critical; many businesses fail, not to lack of profit, but because they run out of cash. Cashflow management – despite my lack of financial training – has always been something that I could do well.
4. Wearing Too Many Hats
Founders often juggle marketing, sales, operations, finance, and more, which can lead to burnout and poor execution. This was a slow slog to grow the company and begin to replace myself on so many different positions. It started by getting enough work so that I didn’t have to focus as much on the technical work – getting more developers was key – then I could begin to do other growth functions, like marketing.

5. Hiring the Right Team
Attracting, affording, and retaining skilled employees or contractors is difficult, yet essential for scaling. In the beginning, I did not pay them enough. After enough painful turnover, I learned my lesson, and as I paid more, was able to keep my good employees longer, resulting in greater client satisfaction.
